Monroe Park: A Placemaking Example
Placemaking is a community-based approach to designing and managing public spaces to create or rejuvenate parks and open spaces. Parks are crucial for community placemaking. They serve as natural gathering spots, enabling cultural expression, community events, and civic engagement. By prioritizing placemaking in park planning, communities can create dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable public spaces that enhance the quality of life for all residents.
Monroe Park was reopened in 2018 after its first-ever renovation since it was created in 1851. Monroe Park in Richmond, located on the VCU campus, supports placemaking by serving as a public space that promotes health, happiness, and well-being, offering benches, shade, grassy areas, and a water fountain for relaxation and community engagement. It's a great place for students to take a break between classes or a nice meet-up spot with friends.
Below is my sketch of the park.
